Augmented Reality (AR)
These AR installations were created with the AR-vos : Augmented Reality - viewer open source which is developed by Tamiko Thiel and Peter Graff. It is an Augmented Reality platform that uses geolocation, image trigger and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). I created the 3D assets with Blender, Sculptris, Zbrush and Unity 3D.
Birds of Plague
These hand drawings were made during the beginning of the pandemic. Perhaps for a way of coping up at that time. This AR installation was set up more than a year later, where all shops were open, and mask are not required anymore. Using the SLAM function of AR, I walked around the central area placing these birds all around, while people go on with their day outside. Perhaps another way of coping at this time where restrictions is bound to happen in any space.
czARi demo
.The illustrations are hand-drawn and painted, while the 3D object is made with Sculptris and Blender. The drawings functions as AR triggers that reveals a different image through the phone.
Above Underworld
In this geolocated AR installation, the digital elements of the Eurythenus Plasticus and fiber optic internet cables emerges out of the underworld and into surface of water and maritime structures. The 3D assets for this were commissioned from the project Underworld by Juan Pablo Pacheco.
Where are the rice harvest?
In this AR SLAM, the image of the Bu’lul is juxtaposed to the space of the market to contemplate on the overlaying narratives and information of Indigenous traditions and knowledge systems with agriculture and ecology, and the process of trade, production and consumption of food in the market. The Bu’lul proliferates as much as you tapped at the screen, but perhaps not as much stuff sold and bought from the market.
The Bu’lul is often a representation of a rice god, and a prominent figure in rice cultivation rituals. These are essential figures and representation in the culture and knowledge system of the Igorot ( an Indigenous society which are also composed of various ethnolinguistic group in the Cordillera region in Northern Philippines). Its form and function is tied with rituals and utilitarian purposes, depending on different contexts such as harvests and healing.
A visit from the spirits
We have a superstitious belief that when a butterfly appears close to you, it means that you are visited by loved ones that has passed on. It was born out of my musing and longing of being visited by them. It is also a reflection on how my changing environment from constant moving had made it less for me to get these visits and connect with such spiritual beliefs.
This geolocated AR was done in the tropical greenhouse in Lodz Poland in hopes for a visit from the butterflies and to feel at least at home with this habitat.
